Co-authored by Rose Gailey and Ian Johnston of Heidrick & Struggles, the new book offers insights into changing culture to prepare for the future amid a once-in-a-generation change in work and office life
Released today: “Future Focused:Shape Your Culture.Shape Your Future.“Examines how executives from all types of companies have used culture to drive successful organizational change and deliver targeted, sustainable performance. The book is being published at a time when the voices of workers around the world are taking center stage.” Future Focused is a practical guide for leaders who grapple with the dramatic changes in the world of work caused by the pandemic and who seek to support and advance their culture through numerous transformation points.
Building on the book’s core guidelines for shaping culture, executives can learn from the successes of successful CEOs and reinvent the culture to cope with the myriad of forced changes of the pandemic and provide consistent, transparent, and forward-thinking leadership that will improve Business results leads. The book illustrates a number of successful corporate cultures through the glasses of leading, inspiring CEOs, including those of Anthem, Aptiv, Helen of Troy, Jack in the Box, Lumen, Yum Brands, and more.
“Culture is the foundation of great businesses and supports performance in times of unprecedented uncertainty and volatility,” said Krishnan Rajagopalan, President and CEO of Heidrick & Struggles. “These days, leadership discussions about hybrid and virtual work guidelines are a top priority as executives redefine what it means to be part of an organization in remote and increasingly dispersed environments. Values and responsibilities that come together to create a meaningful goal , are at the core of the cultures that helped companies thrive both before and during the pandemic. This book offers in-depth best practices drawn from over four decades of experience to help leaders examine the future of their teams and workplaces and evolve their culture and purpose to meet the unique needs of their businesses. “
Co-authors Rose Gailey and Ian Johnston, partners at Heidrick & Struggles and leading experts in the fields of organizational acceleration, cultural design and corporate transformation, co-authored the book “Future Focused”. They emphasize that leaders who lay solid cultural foundations authentically adhere to a range of values and define and rely on an inspiring purpose for building companies, show more resilience and experience less turbulence – and that they do too will be kept in the future, no matter what the future brings. Given that flexibility is cited as one of the fastest growing professional priorities in the US and younger generations of workers are renegotiating the centrality of work and its role in their personal lives, the authors urge companies to move on to culture now focus and provide an easy framework to get started.
The new book contains four guidelines that highlight culture as an ecosystem that affects everyone involved – from employees to customers to shareholders. The guidelines define how a thriving, high-performing culture can be shaped in a healthy ecosystem:
- Thriving cultures require purposeful leadership.
- The transformation has its roots in personal change.
- A broad commitment is required so that the culture can be lived.
- In order to be successful in the future, a systemic orientation is required.
“We are at an important turning point in the way workplaces define culture,” commented Gailey. “More than ever, the way we live and work today requires empathic leadership and the ability to listen understandingly and provide employees with a psychologically safe place to express their concerns. In addition, we have ours Global Culture Survey of Top CEOs in 2021 found that executives who combine culture and strategy also perform significantly better than their competitors – they double their 3-year growth rate in sales. So culture doesn’t just serve as a Catalyst to break through uncertainties, stabilize a company and engage employees, but also to increase financial performance. “
In “Future Focused”, Gailey and Johnston warn that an unconscious design of corporate culture opens the door to risk, while a purposeful, future-oriented culture ensures mindsets and behaviors that deliver performance and minimize risk. CEOs and executives must ensure that the culture is systematically “built into” the company’s HR systems, quality and operational excellence initiatives, and employee and customer experiences in order to be sustainable.
“Communication is oxygen to businesses all the time, but especially in times of transition,” said Johnston. “Managers who communicate openly, honestly, vulnerably and consistently enable employees to overcome uncertainties and act.”
