When former Vice Minister Kim’s surprise departure was discovered in March of last year, former secretary Lee Gyu-won, who was a member of the Supreme Prosecutor’s investigation team at the time, was indicted on charges of conspiring to ban illegal departure by arranging between the Ministry of Justice and Prosecutor Lee Kyu-won.
At that time, the fact-finding team was looking into the sexual entertainment case of former Vice Minister Kim’s villa, but the prosecution judged that it did not have the authority to ban departure because it did not have the right to compulsorily investigate.
In the courtroom, former secretary Lee gave a direct argument and strongly criticized the prosecution for about 40 minutes.
Prosecutors, who had acquitted former Vice Minister Kim twice in the past, formed a special investigation team on the recommendation of a fact-finding team and even prosecuted them.
In addition, even at a moment of dire moment at the time, Prosecutor Lee Gyu-won said that he needed the approval of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office, and claimed that the prosecution only investigated the Ministry of Justice and the Blue House, even though there was a lot of evidence of involvement of the then-deputy prosecutor Bong-wook.
In response, the prosecution countered that it was nonsense to say who disbanded the investigative team and that the investigation of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office was agglomerated.
Cha Gyu-geun, a research fellow at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, who was then head of the Immigration Division at the Ministry of Justice, also denied the charges, accusing the prosecution of claiming that the felony suspects awaiting re-investigation were innocent civilians.

On the 5th of next month, the court will call the head of the immigration screening division of the Ministry of Justice as a witness.
In addition, the first trial of Seoul High Prosecutor Lee Seong-yoon, who was charged with obstructing the investigation, is scheduled to take place on the 20th.
