1. FC Köln keep dreaming of the European Cup

With their fourth win in a row, 1. FC Köln can continue to dream of entering the European Cup: At FC Augsburg, the billy goats also deservedly win 4-1 (2-0) and are currently sixth. Jan Thielmann (12′), Mark Uth (15′) and Anthony Modeste (63′, 79′) scored the goals for FC, for Augsburg the goal by Florian Niederlechner (73′) was only cosmetic.

The game in brief

FC, for whom Thielmann was allowed to start instead of Özcan, who was suspended, found it very difficult at the beginning against aggressive Augsburgers, Vargas (2nd) and Gregoritsch (6th) had the first chances for the hosts. The “Billy Goats” then struck coldly: First Thielmann scored after Schmitz’ template (12′), then Uth after the goal scorer’s header (15′). As a result, the guests failed to decide the game before half-time – Modeste (21st/26th/43rd) and Uth (23rd) missed good chances for the Cologne team, while Augsburg had Gregoritsch (33rd) and Iago (35th) chances of a sense of achievement.

The picture was the same after the break: Cologne controlled, Augsburg tried offensively. Dejan Ljubicic missed the possible 3-0, which Modeste then got. After Gouweleeuw’s foul on him, the Frenchman converted the penalty due to Cologne’s third goal (63′). Again Ljubicic had the final decision on the foot (72′), in return Niederlechner shortened for FCA (73′). The hosts’ hopes were short-lived: after Uth’s submission, Modeste flicked the ball from the edge of the penalty area into the crease (79′). In the closing stages, the Frenchman then missed a potential hat trick (89′).

moment of the game

Celebrating together with the fans: The FC players had to do without that for a long time, now it’s almost becoming a habit. After the game, the pros grabbed the flags from the guest block and waved them at the party with their own supporters.

Quote of the game

“We played an outstanding game. The first ten minutes belonged to Augsburg, the 80 minutes after that to us. I’m surprised by the performance myself.”

Three stars

⭐⭐⭐ Anthony Modeste

Always a goal threat, not always happy in the end. Then ice cold at the penalty and with the right answer to 4:1. Fourth brace of the season – 1. FC Köln’s top scorer!

⭐⭐ Mark Uth

The linchpin of the Cologne offensive. Scored the 2:0 himself, prepared the 4:1. Always playable, always creative, the head of the FC attack.

⭐ Jan Thielmann

Got the chance from the start thanks to Özcan’s yellow card suspension – and used it perfectly. Shot the 1:0 himself, put the 2:0 up. Strong in running and fighting, playfully always at eye level. Strong performance!
