Tragedy and horror clouded South Africa in the early hours of this Sunday when a score of young people between the ages of 18 and 20 were found dead in a night bar in a slum in the city of East London, in the south of the country. This was reported this Sunday by a provincial security official.
Of the total number of victims, 17 lay lifeless on the premises, while another three young people died in hospital and there are two “in critical condition,” said the head of the provincial security department, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe.to the press.
The sad event occurred in a night bar in Scenery Park, which is in East London. “We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident,” provincial police chief Thembinkosi Kinana said.
For his part, a person in charge of the Department of Security and Community of the Eastern Cape province, Unathi Binqose, ruled out the possibility of a stampede as the cause of death. “It’s hard to believe it’s a stampede as there are no visible signs of injuries to the dead,” Binqose said.
The local regional newspaper DispatchLive reported “bodies lying strewn across tables, chairs and on the floor, with no obvious signs of injury.” While local television broadcast images of police trying to calm a crowd gathered outside the bar in this city on the shores of the Indian Ocean, about 1,000 kilometers south of Johannesburg.
“Parents whose children did not sleep at home are here and they want to enter the club to look for their loved ones,” Binqose said. The person in charge stated that in his opinion the clients were students “who were celebrating a party after the written exams.”
