Mat least 24 people have been shot in an addiction therapy facility in Mexico. Another seven people were injured in a suburb of the central Mexican city of Irapuato on Wednesday, three of them seriously, the local police said. At first there was no information. Photos posted online showed bodies of young men lying close together on a floor.
The area around Irapuato in the state of Guanajuato is one of the most dangerous in Mexico. There have been reports of further attacks on drug addict facilities with deaths there in recent weeks.
Among other things, the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel is active in Guanajuato, which is primarily involved in gasoline theft. Cartel chief José Antonio Yépez Ortiz aka “El Marro” published a video about ten days ago in which he angrily threatens to escalate violence. His mother and sister were arrested during raids.
Yépez Ortiz’s group is also fighting for territory with the powerful crime syndicate Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG). The CJNG was held responsible for a failed assassination attempt on Mexico City’s police chief last Friday that killed three people. The cartel’s main area of influence is in the west of the country. His boss is Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, called “El Mencho”. The US government has pledged $ 10 million to provide clues leading to his arrest, and he is being sought for drug trafficking in Mexico’s northern neighbor.
Last year, almost 100 homicide victims were registered in Mexico each day. In addition, more than 60,000 people are believed to have disappeared. The violence continues unabated this year despite the Corona crisis. The bloodshed is largely due to cartels and gangs involved in drug trafficking, kidnapping and extortion. The gangsters often have connections to local security forces. Most crimes in the North American country are never solved, let alone punished.
