3 Girl Scouts among the 4 killed in a crash in West Wisconsin

– Three women and one woman, who were part of a Boy Scout troop that picked up litter along a county road, were killed Saturday morning in Wisconsin, Chippewa County, Wisconsin County.

The driver of the pickup who struck the group, 21-year-old Colten Treu from nearby Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, escaped the scene, but surrendered, according to Sgt. Daniel Sokup of the Lake Hallie Police Department. A fourth girl hit by the pickup was in critical condition from Saturday night.

The girls collected garbage in a ditch along County Road P near the highway. At about 11:40 pm, when a black Ford F-150 pickup departed from the North-South road and hit the group, the police rang out. The driver then crashed from several sources and led the police of Lake Hallie and other authorities on an intense hunt.

The children were in the fourth grade of Halmstad Elementary School at Chippewa Falls Area Scouts, according to a relative of an uninjured girl who was at the scene.

The girl was littering with about six other girls. They all wore bright safety vests and were accompanied by several adults. Another group of Girl Scouts was also at the overpass but in a different location.

Then a black pickup raced the ditch straight to the group, she said. Most of the girls were hit by the truck, which drove off, said the uninjured girl.

A neighbor who lives down the street from the crash site said he saw a group of about 10 boy scouts with lime-colored west along the road around 11 am on Saturday morning.

Not long after, he says, "Hell has gone."

The man, who refused to give his full name, said he had not heard the truck passing, but saw emergency vehicles and helicopters rushing in that direction. He has taken the worst, he said.

"This intersection is just terrible," said Chippewa Falls' longtime neighbor of the two-lane road at a speed of 45 miles per hour.

"It's dangerous," he said, adding that he saw many accidents there. "People are flying over the hill."

Cecily Spallees, a personal caregiver in a group house across the street from the crash site, also said that drivers regularly ride this section, which drops rapidly from 55 to 35 miles per hour.

"I always tell one of my residents that he should not walk through this strip at night," Spallees said, adding that there are no street lights. "It's not safe."

Wisconsin State Patrol officials had closed the area to rebuild the crash on Saturday night, Sokup said.

"The Lake Hallie Police Department wishes to express our deepest sympathy to the affected families," Sokup wrote in a statement.

Chippewa Falls police and the Chippewa County sheriff's department supported the response to the crash.
