Rumors in the MLB indicate that the New York Yankees have been in talks with free agent Jurickson Profar in the midst of their search for an outfielder.
Despite his interest, word in the major league world sees his signing as an obstacle to the goal of staying out of the luxury tax threshold.
But it is a position that they should reconsider, as there are several reasons to think that they would make a mistake if they do not sign Profar.
The Curaçao-born player has been lined up at seven different positions – in addition to the designated hitter role – in his time in the majors. And while he can play three of the four infield positions, it’s in the outfield where he’s spent the most time, with 256 games in left field. That’s where the Yankees need him, but they’ll have insurance in case of any eventuality.
Profar is coming off one of his best offensive years with the San Diego Padres. He hit .243/.331/.391 with 15 home runs, 36 doubles and 58 RBIs in 2022. He’s capable of hitting 20 homers a season (he’s done it twice) and has had a better average, but it was in the last season in which he established a career high with 36 doubles and 152 games.
The versatile player will be in 2023 in his tenth season of service in the Major Leagues and also has experience playing playoffs: he has been in seven postseason series in four years and his offensive line in these instances is .281/.361/.328 . That gives him a competitive advantage over rookie Oswaldo Cabrera, one of those called to fight for the position.
Other elements indicate that the Yankees should sign Profar despite his price: he is a switch hitter and can balance the lineup, he is in a better moment with the bat than veteran Aaron Hicks and his intensity on the field it could be the difference for Aaron Boone’s team.
