5 Foods That Can Still Be Consumed Despite the Expiry Date

Jakarta: The date printed on a food package or the expiration date is often assumed that the food can no longer be eaten, if it is past the date stated. When in fact, for some foods there are still exceptions because the date on the packaging is the date on which the product is best consumed.

And here are some foods that can still be consumed even though they have passed the expiration date:

1. Cereals

If the packaging hasn’t been opened, your breakfast cereal can generally still be consumed. At least around 4-6 months.

2. Dairy products

How long milk or milk products can be stored depends on the fat content in them. Nonfat milk can last for about 7 – 10 days, whereas ordinary milk can be consumed for about 7 days after the expiration date.

If the milk is stale, there will usually be a change in color with a lumpy texture, and an unpleasant odor.

3. Honey

Honey is known for its very long storage time. Because honey has a very low moisture level

“Very few bacteria or microorganisms can survive in such an environment, so honey has a very long shelf life,” said Amina Harris, executive director of the Honey and Pollination Center at the Robert Mondavi Institute at the University of California.

4. Peanut butter

Even if it’s not put in the refrigerator, peanut butter that is still closed can last for about 6 months from the expiration date. However, natural peanut butter, usually has a shorter storage time which is about 3-6 months from the date indicated on the packaging.

5. Rotate

According to StillTasty, packaged bread (like white bread) can be stored for 5-7 days at room temperature if stored properly. When put in a kullkas, the bread will stay fresh about 3-4 days before it becomes stale.

If you want bread to be stored longer, packaged bread can be stored in the freezer. In that condition bread can last for at least 3 months.
