ANKARA, Turkey (AP) – Turkey’s emergency management agency says that an earthquake with pre-size 6.8 shaken the east of the country.
The earthquake struck Friday at 1755 GMT, 8:55 p.m. the local time, near the town of Sivrice in the east of Elazig, said the Presidency for Disaster and Emergency Management.
Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said that no reports had died in Sivrice or other affected areas. However, 4-5 buildings fell in Sivrice, where two people were injured, he said.
Soylu was at an earthquake preparedness meeting when the earthquake hit.
The Minister for Defense, Hulusi Akar, told reporters that there were no reports of any casualties in Sivrice but said that the quake could cause casualties in rural areas outside the town. He said there were troops on standby to help him need them
The Kandilli seismological center in Istanbul said that the earthquake measured 6.5., While the US Geological Survey gave the preliminary size as 6.7, and said the quake had affected not only Turkey but Syria, t Georgia and Armenia too.
The Turkish media said that the earthquake sent people running outside for safety reasons.
