Vaccination card should make vacation and everyday life easier
In the future, corona vaccinations should be very easy to detect: quickly read out a QR code and vaccinated people are exempted from quarantine, for example. The principle sounds simple, but will it be that easy in practice? We clarify the most important questions.
IT expert Holger Volland explains in the video what such a vaccination certificate could look like and who will issue it to us at all.

Which data should be saved?
The certificate is intended to provide information about which vaccine the owner has received. In addition, information about recent tests and past corona infections should also be stored, as well as the name, date of birth, date of vaccination and the issuer of the certificate.
Paper or digital – a certificate you can touch?
On the one hand, it should be possible to digitally store the evidence on the smartphone in a so-called wallet app – in Germany this will be the Corona warning app, among other things. An app for the pure display of the certificate is currently being developed in Germany under the leadership of the technology group IBM, further apps are likely to follow. With the help of a QR code, the information should then be able to be read in a forgery-proof manner throughout the EU. If you don’t have a smartphone or don’t want to save the certificate digitally, you can also get it in paper form.
Who will issue the proof?
In Germany, according to the Ministry of Health, the documents should only be issued by authorized people in vaccination centers, medical practices and hospitals. How people who have already been vaccinated can obtain evidence has not yet been conclusively clarified. It is expected that the evidence will be available where the vaccinations were administered. “Various options are being examined to subsequently create digital vaccination certificates,” said the Ministry of Health.
Will the vaccination certificate be compulsory?
No. “The digital vaccination certificate is only a voluntary and additional offer,” says a current information from the Federal Ministry of Health. Anyone who does not have a digital vaccination certificate can still prove a vaccination using the yellow vaccination card.
What is the certificate then required for?
The EU countries decide that themselves. Popular travel destinations such as Greece and Spain have long been interested in the certificate. However, it has not yet been conclusively determined what exactly it will be used there. What is clear, however, is that the verification of tests, vaccinations and recoveries should be significantly simplified. In addition, the EU states should be able to decide for themselves whether to accept certificates based on national emergency approvals for the vaccines Sputnik V and Sinopharm, which have not yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
What about data protection?
All parties involved assure that data protection is guaranteed. According to the information, no personal data is stored on servers, but only on your own mobile phone. The certificate only ensures that the data stored on the smartphone is authentic and actually belongs to the person specified on the certificate.
Will the vaccination certificates come before the summer vacation?
It is still unclear when exactly the digital European Covid certificate will be introduced in the individual countries. The Federal Ministry of Health said at the beginning of the week that it was assumed that an electronic vaccination certificate could be provided “in the second half of the second quarter”, ie by June 30th at the latest.
The chairman of the Christian Democratic EPP group in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber (CSU), called on the EU states to introduce the certificate as soon as possible. The Green MEP Jutta Paulus assumes that Germany will not be ready until July. (dpa/lra)
