97% of the municipalities in Mexico infected with COVID-19

Mayors of Mexico | August 23, 2021.- Until this August 22, at least one case of COVID-19 is officially registered in 2,394 municipalities in the country, almost 97% of the 2,473 Mexican localities, including mayors of Mexico City.

The third wave of COVID-19 infections that Mexico faces is more serious than the previous ones as the states have reached more infections per 100,000 inhabitants than what was reached in the highest contagion peaks in April 2020 and January-February of 2021.

According to the official data presented in the Official site of the Federal Ministry of Health, during this third wave of infections the entities present more active infections per 100 thousand inhabitants, the highest number is located in Colima, with 411 active infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Mexico City, remains in second place, with the highest spikes of infections compared to the second wave, with 351 active infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

Although Mexico City has remained in those numbers in the most critical moments of the pandemic, this time there are more states with active infections above 200 per 100,000 inhabitants, with Tabasco with 345, Nayarit with 213 and San Luis Potosí with 203; in previous waves, these states had remained below 150 active infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

Chihuahua is the entity that, as of August 22, 2021, presents the lowest number of active infections per 100,000 inhabitants, with 14.56.

In this context, the country already registers 2,394 municipalities with at least one confirmed case of COVID-19, a figure that is equal to 96.7% of the 2,473 municipalities and mayors in Mexico, although it should be noted that the records of the federal Ministry of Health only consider 2,457 municipalities, including the mayors of Mexico City.

Until yesterday, August 22, 3 million 225 thousand 73 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the 2,394 municipalities that cover the 32 states, only Chiapas, Oaxaca and Puebla They have municipalities where no confirmed cases have been registered.

The state with the most municipalities without contagions in Oaxaca, with 59 municipalities no confirmed cases; follow him Chiapas with three municipalities and Puebla, with a municipality COVID-19 free.

Municipalities with active cases

As for municipalities, as of today, August 23, there are 1,673 municipalities in the country with active cases, 67.6% of the 2,473 Mexican demarcations. However, all entities in the country have active cases to date.

The municipalities with the most active cases are: Álvaro Obregón (6,097), Iztapalapa (5,202), Gustavo A. Madero (3,388), Centro -Tabasco- (3,092), Puebla (2,820), Monterrey (2,603), Tlalpan (2,442), Querétaro (1,835), Xochimilco (1,620) and San Luis Potosí (1,525).
