The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the introduction of the first dedicated postpartum depression in the market, a major shift in the face of one of the most widespread disorders among new mothers.
The new drug, Zolreso, is a solution injected intravenously for 60 hours (two and a half days). Experiments showed the efficacy of the drug within 24 hours of ingestion.
The agency said in a press release published on Tuesday that the drug was the first of its kind, as patients were taking traditional antidepressants.
The property price puts an end to the hopes of millions of women suffering from postpartum depression. The cost of the dose alone ranges from $ 20,000 to $ 35,000. This is in addition to the cost of staying in a hospital or medical facility that carries out the injection process and associated procedures.
The statement said that the approval of the drug is conditional on several procedures, including the enrollment of patients with an awareness program on the side effects of the drug before the injection, which is under close medical supervision.
Side effects of the drug include dizziness, drowsiness, anesthesia, and possibly sudden fainting. Doctors also monitor oxygen levels in the blood throughout the injection.
Mothers also monitor how they treat their children throughout the injection.
Studies have shown that the drug does not cause any long-term symptoms. Postpartum depression affects one in nine new mothers and lasts about six months between 25-50 percent of patients.
The following are some of the most important things we know about the disease:
what is Post delivery depression?
It is a state of depression and depression that affects mothers, and it takes a year to conceive. Symptoms may begin to appear during the last months of pregnancy.
The disease is the advanced stage of "transient psychological disorder", a state of frustration and apathy and desire to cry that affects the mother during the first two weeks after birth, and does not last more than several days.
Another postpartum mental state is known as "puerperal disorder", which is characterized by rapid mood swings, audiovisual hallucinations, or strange and sudden behavior. They are less common, with one in five hundred women, especially those who have a family history of bronchial or bipolar disorder.
The most prominent symptoms
Postpartum depression causes a feeling of sadness and frustration, loss of interest in the outside world, and a feeling of exhaustion and inability to accomplish anything. As well as feeling sleepy and drowsy during the day, insomnia at night.
The infected mother has difficulty dealing with her baby, and may in some cases lead to harming the mother to her child and herself.
The mother tends to isolation, avoiding any interaction or contact with others.
The mother may not notice her postpartum depression, as the symptoms develop gradually.
The disease is not confined to women, as studies have shown that one out of ten parents suffer postpartum depression. And that pathogens do not necessarily change in women's hormones as rumored.
There are three stages to treat postpartum depression. The first is the patient's awareness of the disease, communicating with family and friends to help. Focus on activities that will provide more comfort and break the routine associated with birth and its consequences, and a healthy diet.
The second is to communicate with a doctor or psychotherapist to develop a detailed treatment plan and follow the development of the condition.
The third is to treat antidepressants. And if other alternatives fail, the depression will continue for a long time. These drugs are prescribed under the supervision of a doctor.
