The newly discovered strain “Obskaya” corresponds to the Siberian subtype.

A group of Russian scientists from the RAS universities together with colleagues from the Institute of Systematics and Ecology of Animals of the SB RAS reported that a new strain of tick-borne encephalitis virus was found. For several years, scientists have been studying the virus.

Recall that there are three subtypes of the virus of tick-borne encephalitis: eastern, European and Siberian. The main difference between viruses is the severity of the manifestations revealed by them.

The easiest course of infection is typical for the western subtype of the VEB. This type of virus is common in the Republic of Belarus.

The difference between all subtypes is 12% in the nucleotide sequence. It turned out that the new strain, in its genetic structure, is close to this border: it is, of course, a Siberian subtype, but more similar to other types. He has a unique protein structure – more precisely, some variants of amino acid residues in them have not been described before, shared junior research associate of the IKBBM SB RAS, candidate of biological sciences Sergei Tkachev.

Scientists conducted an experiment in mice, and found out that for them the strain has the ability to penetrate the brain. How the virus will affect the person is unknown.

The new virus was called Obskaya, and in its properties it resembles the Siberian subtype, widespread in the Novosibirsk region.

Scientists do not know yet whether the existing vaccines created on the basis of the Far Eastern or European strain will be effective against Ob obesity.
