Initially, the police said the shooting, which took place in the night from Saturday to Sunday, had caused "many casualties".
"Investigators believe that many people were reached at the exit of a discotheque, near Little Chapel Street and Malvern Road, at 3:20 am local time," police said in a statement.
"The exact circumstances are being reconstituted"
The police did not provide more details about the people affected by the shootings, only indicating that the incident occurred in the Prahran district of Melbourne.
"The exact circumstances are being reconstituted," the source added.
Mass killings are rare in Australia, where gun-carrying laws have been rigorous since the deaths of 35 people in 1996 in Port Arthur, Tasmania.
Last year, seven family members perished in western Australia. The murderer then immediately committed suicide. This is the deadliest killing in the country since the tragedy of Port Arthur.
