It concerns 400 so-called narrow-body aircraft, aircraft with one aisle. In addition, Air India is ordering 100 widebody aircraft, multi-aisle aircraft. The deal includes the A350 from Airbus and the 787 and 777 from competitor Boeing.
The ailing Air India was taken over by the Tata conglomerate last year. The airline has been kept afloat for decades at the expense of the Indian taxpayer. However, according to the sources, the new owner has ambitious plans to return the company as an international player.
Airbus and Boeing declined to comment on the deal to Reuters. Tata Group has not yet responded.
