Akouedo landfill: An equation that seeks solution

For about 50 years, the Akouedo unauthorized landfill has received all of the waste produced in the district of Abidjan. Between the concerns of the populations and the management of the site, the equation remains to be resolved.
The populations living around this large dumping ground have repeatedly stepped up to the plate to express their difficult living conditions to the State.

With more than a million tonnes of waste per year, according to studies carried out by the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, the environment of this landfill is totally polluted. It represents a risk not only for public health, but also for the lagoon ecosystem and the water table of Abidjan. So far, no concrete decision has been taken for its relocation. Read more.
