Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates receives the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, to discuss ways of cooperation and coordination between the UNHCR and the Syrian government, especially after the earthquake disaster.

Grandi, who arrived in Syria yesterday, confirmed, during his review of the conditions of those affected by the earthquake in the city of Jableh, that the organization is trying to mobilize the required capabilities to enhance the response in Syria, and that there is approval of a new cash assistance program in coordination with the Lattakia governorate to help the most needy families.

Grandi and the accompanying delegation, during his briefing and the Governor of Lattakia, Amer Hilal, according to SANA, on the conditions of those affected by the earthquake in the shelter of the martyr Saleh Mahmoud in Jableh, listened to the demands of the families residing in the center, which included lifting the unjust siege on Syria, which negatively affects the provision of basic necessities of life, especially medicines.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees expressed his deep condolences to the victims of the earthquake, pointing out that the organization continues to provide assistance, indicating that there is approval for a new cash assistance program in coordination with the governorate to help the most needy families in terms of house rents or providing the basic needs that each family wants. And he added: The organization is trying to mobilize the capabilities required to enhance the response in Syria, through communication with donor countries, including assistance in securing alternative housing, indicating the willingness of the Commission to provide its expertise and assistance in dealing with this disaster due to the experiences it gained from dealing with similar circumstances. .

He said, “We are interested in strengthening coordination and communication with government efforts in this field,” considering that the presence of the UNHCR office in Lattakia helps in activating the required coordination.

For his part, the governor of Lattakia reviewed during a meeting held in the municipality of Jableh the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake and the difficulties that accompanied the plan to respond to this disaster as a result of the lack of supplies for rescue operations and the recovery of survivors and victims, and the shortage of equipment, medicines and ambulances as a result of the terrorist war that Syria was exposed to and the unfair sanctions that affected the country. all walks of life.

He pointed to the difficulties and challenges resulting from the great destruction of buildings and buildings that are about to fall, which need to be strengthened and restored, in addition to the damaged schools that will affect the progress of the educational process, pointing out that the number of those affected by the earthquake is more than 77 thousand families, or approximately 325 thousand person, and that facing these repercussions requires international assistance, starting with the complete lifting of the sanctions imposed on Syria, in order to allow the provision and arrival of these aids.
