The current desktop PC from Aldi offers a lot of computing power and features for 500 euros, but also has minor weaknesses.

Both Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd will sell the desktop PC Medion Akoya P32010 (MD 34140) with the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G quad-core processor and 256 GB SSD for 499 euros as of Thursday, 14 March. We were able to test a test sample in the c't laboratory in advance.

Immediately it is clear that the Akoya P32010 contains much equipment for the money, because alone the AMD processor would cost in the retailer nearly 130 euro. Add to that 8 GB of dual-channel RAM, a 256 GB PCIe / NVMe SSD, an additional 1 TB hard disk, a DVD burner, a WLAN adapter and an SD card reader. Not a matter of course are also three years warranty.

In addition, the Lenovo division Medion has carefully resolved some aspects: For easy retrofitting of a hard disk or for backups, there is a hot swappable frame for a 3.5-inch drive in the front panel; a 2.5-inch disk (or SSD) can also be screwed in here.

On the back are two USB sockets with the fastest transfer rate of 10 GBit / s available so SuperSpeedPlus aka USB 3.1 Gen 2, both a USB-A and a USB-C socket. A display port and an HDMI jack, two monitors with maximum Ultra HD resolution (3840 × 2160 pixels) and 60 Hertz frame rate can be connected. In addition, there are a total of 8 more USB sockets on the PC.

The interior of the Medion Akoya P32010 looks tidy.

Instead of a single 8-gigabyte memory module, Medion has installed two 4-GB DIMMs in two-channel operation, which gives the Rzenon Vega 11 integrated graphics processor in the Ryzen 5 2400G more 3D performance. The memory modules can be replaced, but then you have to replace at least one – there are only two DIMM slots available.

Also PCI Express cards can be retrofitted, especially a graphics card. However, FSP's 250-watt PSU, which has been used in various Aldi PCs for years, has no PCIe power cables; a retrofit card must therefore be content with the performance of the PEG slot. So a maximum of about an AMD Radeon RX 560 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti are possible. After all, the power supply still has two free SATA power connectors.

The M.2 SSD comes as well as the motherboard of the Akoya P32010 from an unnamed manufacturer.

Also, a SATA port is still free, in principle, could still screw a 2.5-inch plate or SSD internally – in addition to the removable frame. Note: Its screwless retention clip fits only 3.5 "medium threaded holes, others need to be screwed as well as 2.5" drives.

The quad-core AMD Ryzen 5 2400G in the Cinebench R15 with 774 points does not quite reach its optimal multithreading performance of 813 points on other motherboards, but remains only 5 percent below. Otherwise, everything runs as expected, thanks to two-channel RAM – even if only DDR4-2400 instead of DDR4-2666 – is synonymous, the 3D performance is quite good. The latter is sufficient, however, only for relatively undemanding games up to 720p or sometimes full HD resolution.

On the other hand, the Medion Akoya P32010 plays 4K videos from YouTube smoothly and with little load on the CPU cores.

Also, the data transfer rates of SSD, hard drive and via USB 3.1 Gen 2 are good to very good. The NVMe SSD with Phison E12 controller creates more than 2 GB / s when read, but after a few seconds the transfer rate drops below it. When writing, it starts strongly with over 1 GB / s, but when the cache is full, only about the half left. This is just as appropriate for SSDs in this price range as it is for the intended use. Windows boot time is good at 14 seconds, but no better than with SATA SSDs.

The Toshiba hard drive is a now seven-year-old model with a single 1-TB disk (single platter), which operates very economically at idle. The 2TB version would not cost 20 euros more.

The power consumption is in the usual range, 22 watts in idle including hard drive are acceptable.

Medion makes a mistake in the SD card reader, which creates only a miserable 38 MB / s; apparently he only masters USB 2.0 HighSpeed - on a proper 12-euro reader delivers our UHS-II test card over 200 MB / s.

The DVD burner in slimline format, which one knows from notebooks, can not be operated so comfortably.

The DVD burner in slimline format, which one knows from notebooks, can not be operated so comfortably.

The biggest nuisance of the Medion Akoya P32010 is the non-positive mounting of the hard disk, which transmits its vibrations to the case and ultimately causes clearly audible running noise: 0.6 sone at idle are bearable (grade: good), but more noise than necessary. The calculator is therefore better under than on the desk. Accesses to the hard disk as well as the high-revving fan under full CPU load are noticeable with 1 to 1.1 sone (satisfactorily).

Many components – the lame Card Reader, the Wi-Fi adapter with just a 433 Mbps stream, the included USB input devices, the upright mounted slimline burner – are of simple quality. However, this is hardly to be expected given the price.

Aldi or Medion install some unnecessary software inserts, the most disturbing of which is a 30-day trial of McAfee LiveSafe, which annoys with hints to the soon expiration. The best way to uninstall the software and make sure that the built-in Mircrosoft virus monitor takes over.

However, Medion omits parts of the Radeon graphics driver: A 4K display connected via HDMI 2.0 showed overscan, which could only be switched off after we had installed the current driver (19.3.1) from the AMD website; in addition you select under "pixel format" namely "RGB 4: 4: 4 …"

Needlessly complicated is the BIOS setup on the mainboard "MH9111" of the unnamed manufacturer: Here you will find about meaningless settings for non-existing eMMC flash memory. But you can turn off UEFI Secure Boot and turn on the Compatibility Support Module (CSM) to boot in BIOS-compatible mode if you wish. Ubuntu 18.10 started from a SATA SSD but also easily with UEFI Secure Boot and also recognized the PCIe wireless adapter. Suspend mode also worked on Linux.

The Medion Akoya P32010 with AMD Ryzen 5 2400G is a typical Aldi PC: A lot of equipment for the money, but also compromises on some components needed. Medion exploits the capabilities of the AMD processor well. If you are very sensitive to noise, the running noise of the hard disk in a quiet environment may get on your nerves.
