HERMOSILLO.-Authorities confirmed the first winter storm for Sonora, which will enter this November 26.

“The first winter storm of the season and a polar jet stream are expected to enter this Friday, along the central coast of Sonora, which could cause a new and marked drop in temperatures,” said Civil Protection in a statement.

Wind gusts of 60 to 80 km / h are also expected, moderate to heavy rains and precipitation of snow or snow water in the mountainous region.

The foregoing will allow the conditions of cloudy to cloudy sky, with probability of moderate to strong rains, starting on Thursday in most of the state, but mainly in the southern and southeastern regions, with snow or sleet, in the upper parts of the mountainous region, with moderate to strong winds and marked decrease in temperatures, mainly in the north, northeast and eastern regions of the state.

These conditions are expected to occur during the days of Thursday through Saturday. The lowest temperatures could occur as of Saturday.

Civil Protection issued a meteorological warning due to a marked drop in temperatures and an alert for moderate to strong winds, with special attention to the municipalities of: San Luis Río Colorado, Plutarco Elías Calles, Puerto Peñasco, Caborca, Pitiquito, Átil, Tubutama, Sáric, Oquitoa, Altar, Trincheras, Santa Ana, Benjamín Hill, Ímuris, Magdalena, Nogales, Santa Cruz and Cananea.

With current information, temperatures of 2 to 5 centigrade or less could be registered in the border regions with Arizona and mountainous areas of the state, as of Saturday; in the municipalities of the central region from 10 to 14 centigrade, in the northwest region from 9 to 12 centigrade and in the south from 14 to 16 centigrade.

How many winter storms will Mexico have?

It is predicted that 10 to 12 winter storms affect the national territory during the current season 2021-2022, as reported by the general coordinator of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), Alejandra Méndez Girón.

Méndez Girón highlighted that the winter storm season begins in November and ends in March of next year, with December and January being the months in which the greatest number of these phenomena are recorded.
