The Algerian government on Tuesday lifted a ban on the importation of some raw materials for the food industry temporarily, after local companies were hit by a shortage of materials, the Ministry of Commerce said. The partial lifting of the import ban is limited to raw materials for some food items, including chocolate, biscuits, candy, yoghurt and juices. “The import of these inputs is now unrestricted,” the ministry said in a statement.
Algeria is trying to cut spending and encourage domestic production, but the non-oil sector is still not developed, forcing the government to import most of the goods from abroad.
Imports of raw materials were a ban on imports of 951 products, including mobile phones and household appliances, imposed earlier this year as part of an effort to cut spending after a drop in energy revenues.
