The victim was identified as Matthew Reid, who was in El Salvador visiting for tourism with his brother.

According to an officer of the National Civil Police (PNC) post in Mizata, they received the notice of the surfer's disappearance at about noon. Later they located the body of Reid trapped in a rocky cave; and until 5 o'clock on Thursday afternoon they were still working against time to rescue the body.
"Right now the tide is full and the waves are too strong, but the Politur (Tourist Police) and the naval are taking care of the rescue" said the agent.
