an app to make 3D plans with an iPhone

iOS 16 will come with an amazing new programming interface, named RoomPlan. It will generate a 3D plan just by scanning a room with the LiDAR of the iPhone. And the result is very successful.

Recently, Apple unveiled its new operating system, iOS 16, which will be available this fall. And this one never ceases to surprise, since it has been revealed that it will soon be possible to use your iPhone to create a 3D plan of an interior. However, if some applications are already able to do this, they are not always the most precise. From now on, this will be possible thanks to the new programming interface (API) called RoomPlan, which exploits the LiDAR of the iPhone and iPad – a pulsed laser beam which makes it possible to measure distances, and therefore to analyze objects and the dimensions of objects. a part – to quickly create a 3D plan. A function that will delight real estate agents and interior designers.

A complete plan in seconds

Filipe Esposito, a journalist for 9to5Mac, reveals that he was able to test this technology thanks to a demonstration code that the developers lent him. He explains that he was able to create a 3D plan of his living room in a few seconds, simply by pointing the camera of his iPhone in the direction of the walls of the room with a compatible application.

The API can even recognize certain objects, which it shows as blocks, so that the focus is on the floor plan. “What impressed me the most, besides the precision, was the speed of the digitization, explains the journalist. The API provides excellent animation and a real-time preview that shows scanning progress.” The 3D floor plan can be exported as a USDZ file compatible with popular tools such as Cinema 4D, Shapr3D and AutoCAD.
