An inspector calls ... A review of the Blythswood Square Hotel, Glasgow

An inspector calls … The Blythswood Square Hotel is a good place to explore beautiful Glasgow

  • The Blythswood Square Hotel is in a prime location, just a short walk from George Square
  • The room of the inspector had high ceilings, a marble bathroom and a huge shower
  • He said the shrimp cocktail was "bleak" and there was a delay at breakfast

The inspector

There are few better places than the Blythswood Square Hotel to enjoy the offers of Glasgow, about six minutes walk from George Square, where – presumably to the chagrin of Nicola Sturgeon – there are statues of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert near the hotel stand central pillar celebrating Sir Walter Scott.

The hotel used to be the headquarters of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club and the square itself was the meeting place of the ladies of the night – hence the red lights in the windows.

A very polite American ("I come from a small west from here") leads us to our room, which has high ceilings, gray walls, and a marble bath with a huge shower.

On the first floor, which is practically the width of the building, there is the salon with its chic cocktail bar. It's Saturday night. Many high heels, colorful shirts, plump muscles.

The restaurant is located on the ground floor, where we order two sad shrimp cocktails (watery and not nearly sufficient Marie Rose sauce) and a few good steaks. The service is slow.

Then there is an unfortunate backup in the morning. Too many people came for breakfast at the same time. We are asked to sit in a waiting area. Our room number is noted. "We'll call you when a table is available."

That's not ideal at these prices. Once we have left the red carpet, the buffet is rich. We are far more than good for us before we set out to explore the most self-deprecating city in the world.

Billy Connolly said: "The best thing about Glasgow is that it will look the same in a nuclear attack." Nonsense, but refreshing, that a Scot can joke about it so mercilessly.
