Anies Rebuilds the Kunir Village that Ahok Evicted

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

Governor of DKI Jakarta, Anies Baswedan officially started to open the development process Kunir Susun Village, in the Taman Sari area, West Jakarta on Thursday (14/10).

In the inauguration of the development process, Anies briefly mentioned the incident in 2015, when the area became a victim eviction. Anies said, often the government does have policies that actually have an impact on people’s lives.

“Often we meet with situations where to carry out a big interest it has an impact on people’s livelihoods, it happens everywhere,” said Anies in front of the residents of Taman Sari, Thursday (14/10).

Kampung Susun Kunir is an area that was expelled by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government under the governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok. The area is considered to have violated the building construction permit because it is located on the banks of the Ciliwung river.

Kampung Kunir is located in the Old Town area. The DKI Provincial Government is targeting the area as a low emission zone (LEZ) area to improve air quality in the capital city.

When elected in the 2018 gubernatorial election, Anies then promised to build a shelter or temporary residence for the evicted residents. At least 33 shelters were built at that time.

“I remember coming to this place at the beginning of 2018 when I met all of them who were still living in tented beds, it was shown that the area didn’t have a shelter at that time,” said Anies.

He promised that as of Thursday (14/10) the construction process of the Kunir Susun Village would begin. In front of the residents, he promised a decent place to live as he had done by building the Kampung Susun Aquarium.

“Bismillah, by saying Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, the construction of the Kunir Susun Village in the Pinangsia Village is officially declared to have begun,” Anies concluded.
