The AirPods Pro is also to be given a new surround feature, also via update. Apple announces the spatial audio function under the name “Spatial Audio”. The headphones should also provide a cinema feeling when watching series and watching films at home or on the go.
According to developer Mary-Ann Ionascu, sound sources with Dolby 5.1, Dolby 7.1 and Dolby Atmo are supported. Because in-ear headphones cannot offer the right surround sound, another technology is used: In order to hear the sound from apparently different directions with just one plug in each ear, the all-round sound is mimicked using artificial intelligence. If necessary, this changes the frequencies and creates a cinema feeling.
In addition, your head movement is tracked to ideally adapt the tones at any time. For example, Apple wants to ensure that you can hear the voice of a drama from the direction it is in the scene, for example, and that this direction does not change when you move. At the same time, the position of the playback device is also tracked. In this way, realistic surround sound can also be guaranteed when you move the iPad or iPhone.
There is also no official date for the rollout of the firmware update that “Spatial Audio” brings to the AirPods Pro.
The keynote for the AirPods updates can be seen in the video below from 42 minutes and 26 seconds.
