Apple confirmed the removal of the Russian social network VKontakte of its application store (App Store) after the new British sanctions against organizations and individuals in retaliation for the annexation referendums organized by Moscow in four regions of Ukraine.

Users of VKontakte (VK)a Russian platform similar to Facebook, will still be able to use the app if they already have it on their iPhone, but they can’t download or update it.

“There may be difficulties with notifications and with payments.” This was indicated by the network in a statement on Tuesday, adding that it had recently improved the application so that it would work for a long time without updates.

According to Semana, Apple explained that VKontakte’s mobile service publishers were controlled by entities sanctioned by London, so the accounts of these developers were blocked and their applications can no longer be downloaded in any country.

London on Monday announced new sanctions against Russia in response to referendums deemed “illegal” by kyiv and its Western allies.

Meanwhile, on its website, VK commented that its apps “are getting blocked by Apple.” But that they “will continue to develop and support IOS apps.”

Access to social media and news sites in Russia has been heavily restricted since the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Several local media and international platforms were blocked or forced to close by Moscow, which represses any criticism of its offensive.
