The working conditions of many employees in the world have been in debate, especially of large American companies. It was recently revealed that more than 100 workers from a Apple store in a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, voted to unionize by a margin of almost two to one this Saturday, June 18, joining a growing drive in the United States in the technology, retail and service industries to organize for stronger workplace protections.

Apple is one of the most important technology companies in the world, and in the last decade it has quadrupled its number of employees, according to data from Statista. According to the data provided in its tax report, in 2021 its workforce was made up of 154,000 full-time workers.

This was the vote

As reported by the US media, workers in Towson, Maryland, they voted by a margin of 65 to 33 in favor of joining the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

The union’s announcement noted that the result of the vote could not be immediately confirmed with the National Labor Relations Board, which would have to certify the result and did not immediately respond to messages.

To that effect, the union and employees trying to organize said they sent Apple CEO Tim Cook a notice last month that they were seeking to organize a union.

In addition, said statement said that his main motivation was to seek “rights that we currently do not have.”

“I applaud the courage shown by CORE members at the Towson Apple Store in achieving this historic victory.”

“They made a huge sacrifice for thousands of Apple employees across the country who had all eyes on this election.”IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. said in the statement.

To date, Apple has not indicated anything about this vote, although various media have asked for a position after the news was released.

“This victory shows the growing demand for unions at Apple Stores and in different industries across the country,” he said in the statement.

The IAM, is a union that bills itself as one of the largest and most diverse industrial unions in North America, representing approximately 600,000 active and retired members in the aerospace, defense, airline, rail, transit, health care, automotive and others.

Amazon and Starbucks workers have also formalized their unions in some branches, where we remember that on April 1 the historic vote was registered that represented the first time that a labor campaign had success in Amazon’s 28-year history, where about 55 percent of employees who voted at the Staten Island warehouse known as JFK8 supported the union.

But then, according to a federal regulator, Amazon won a hearing weeks later based on its objections to the union vote, and the evidence behind those claims “could be grounds to overturn the election.”
