April 2024 Election, PKB Predicts There will be Pilkada Chaos

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

Vice Chairman of Commission II DPR RI Luqman Hakim responding to the statement of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD who stated that the main options for voting dates were Election 2024 fell on April 24, 2024.

The PKB politician believes that holding elections in April 2024 will actually lead to chaos in the stages of the election. This is because it is very close to the stage of the simultaneous regional elections which will be held in November 2024.

“Therefore, I predict that there will be chaos in the pilkada stage if the voting is held in April or May 2024,” Luqman said when contacted. CNNIndonesia.com, Friday (24/9).

Luqman suspects that the government still has not considered the importance of the time gap between the validation of the election results and the registration stage for regional head candidates to the KPUD which must be carried out no later than August 2024.

“Why the registration of regional heads in August? Because Law Number 10 of 2016 orders the Simultaneous Regional Head Elections to be held in November 2024,” he said.

Luqman explained, learning from the experience of the 2019 election, the resolution of election disputes takes about three months. If the 2024 election vote is in April or May 2024, there is almost no time lag between the ratification of the election results and the registration of regional head candidates to the KPUD.

It is even possible that in August 2024, the election dispute has not been resolved and the election results cannot be ratified. According to him, what should also be considered is the process of nominating the regional head election from an independent path, which takes a relatively long time.

“This includes taking the organizers’ time to carry out factual verification of independent candidate support,” he said.

He described the 2024 Pilkada that would be followed by 514 cities/regencies and 33 provinces. If on average there are four people registering with a party to run for cakada/cawakada, there will be 2,188 people to be selected by each party.

“For a rational selection process, I estimate that it will take at least 2.5 months. So, if there is not enough time, transactional politics will most likely occur,” he explained.

“If the selection process is dominated by transactional practices, you can imagine what the quality of the regional heads as a result of the 2024 Simultaneous Pilkada will be,” he added.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said the government had three options for voting in the 2024 election. Of the three options, one of the main options for the 2024 election was April 24, 2024.

The Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian previously also proposed that the election be postponed to April or May 2024.

This proposal differs from the Joint Working Team which agreed that the legislative election (pileg) and presidential election (pilpres) will be held on February 21, 2024. Meanwhile, the Regional Head Election (Pilkada) will be held on November 27, 2024.
