Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – New Omicron subvariants namely BA.4 and BA.5 have been detected in Indonesia. The emergence of this subvariant is said to be the cause of the rise in Covid-19 cases in Indonesia.
The Ministry of Health estimates that a spike in cases caused by the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants will occur next month. These estimates, based on experience in dealing with previous subvariances.
Then what are the characteristics of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5? What makes it different from the common cold?
According to an epidemiologist from Australia’s Griffith University, Dicky Budiman, referring to data in other countries such as Portugal, patients with Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariant infections who have not been vaccinated against the full dose of Covid-19 experience symptoms that are almost similar to the Delta variant. One of them, loss of the ability to smell or anosmia.
“There is a loss of smell, feeling tired. In severe cases it can be like Delta has to go to the hospital,” he said.
The similarity of symptoms occurred because the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants adopted a combination of symptoms of the Delta variant and the Omicron variant.

“BA.4 and BA.5 he has a character that is a combination of infecting speed inherited from Omicron, [yaitu] fast and easy to infect both those who have not or have been vaccinated, even more effective now,” he explained.
Meanwhile, internal medicine expert dr. Adria Rusli from RSPI Sulianti Saroso explained that the incubation period of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants was faster than the original Omicron (BA.1) and Delta.
A person infected with this subvariance can experience symptoms ranging from coughing to painful swallowing within two to three days. Unlike Omicron and Delta which usually take up to five or seven days.
The head of the Infection Working Group, the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association (PDPI), Erlina Burhan, explained that the flu is rarely accompanied by sore throat or itchy throat. While these two symptoms are often found in the Omicron variant.
He explained that the typical symptoms of Omicron are nasal congestion or rhinorrhea, cough, sore throat, especially an itchy throat.
“It’s a bit similar to [gejala] flu,” he said in an online seminar entitled Super-immunity and Implication on New Variant of Covid-19″, some time ago.
“But rarely is the common cold a sore throat and rarely an itchy throat, the flu is usually a runny nose and sometimes it’s accompanied by a cough.” he added.
