The historic president of Argentina’s Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, Hebe Bonafini, died today at the age of 93, sources close to her family have announced.
Upon hearing the news, the government of President Alberto Fernandez expressed “profound pain” and decreed three days of national mourning. In the first half of October she had been hospitalized for three days in the Italian hospital of La Plata for tests which had not revealed particular pathologies.
Strong in character and very combative, Bonafini was the protagonist for many years of the Thursday ‘rondas’ on the Plaza de Mayo to denounce that the dictatorship (1976-1983) had caused many thousands of disappeared, including two of her sons, Jorge Omar and Raúl Alfredo.
Promoter of numerous initiatives, including a University of human rights, Bonafini would have celebrated his 94th birthday on December 4th.
