Argentine President-elect Alberto Fernandez said he spoke by telephone for about an hour Saturday with French President Emmanuel Macron and discussed South American issues, including the release of the former Brazilian leader, Bloomberg news agency reported.

"We had a great conversation. We talked about the problems of the continent," Fernandez said at the opening session of the Puebla Group meeting in Buenos Aires, including the return of former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to politics after a high-level court decision to abolish the rules for continuing imprisonment of convicts.

Fernandez said the two leaders discussed the situation in countries such as Chile, Bolivia, Argentina and Venezuela, but gave no details. Fernandez's spokesman said Argentina and France would discuss dates for Fernandez's possible visit to France.
