Assisted reproduction treatments applied successfully in Hospiten Santo Domingo – Diario Social RD

Treatments such as programmed intercourse or artificial insemination belong to the set of assisted reproduction medical techniques offered by Hospiten Santo Domingo. This was stated by Dr. Rosmery Féliz Corporán, Gynecologist-Obstetrician and specialist in Assisted Human Reproduction at the medical center, who explained that assisted reproduction treatment consists of low-complexity and high-complexity techniques.

“Among the low complexity treatments we have programmed intercourse with ovulation stimulation, aimed at young couples who have little time looking to get pregnant and who, after studying the infertile couple, their diagnosis is focused on ovulation problems. It consists of a gentle ovarian stimulation using hormonal medications, the stimulation will be periodically controlled by sonography. After obtaining a maximum of two follicles with the appropriate size (17-20mm), a different hormonal drug will be administered that will subsequently trigger ovulation, indicating the days of intercourse, ”Féliz Corporán explained.

He said that artificial insemination (AI) is also part of low complexity treatments, it consists of ovarian stimulation that seeks the development of several follicles, the procedure is programmed for the optimal moment of growth and maturation of the eggs. The AI procedure consists of introducing a semen sample into the uterus, which previously underwent sperm training in the laboratory in order to select the motile sperm capable of fertilizing an egg.

Dr. Féliz Corporán explained that in vitro fertilization (IVF) is part of highly complex procedures, it consists of the union of the ovum and a sperm in the laboratory and can be carried out using two different techniques. The first is the conventional IVF technique, in which each of the ovules obtained in the puncture are deposited in drops of previously prepared semen, so that the natural fertilization process is simulated on the culture plate. The second technique is by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): it is a highly precise technique that consists of our embryologists individually selecting the best sperm and introducing them one by one into each ovule.

Dr. Féliz Corporán pointed out that all cases are different, so there are couples who only need a scheduled intercourse to achieve a pregnancy, while others need artificial insemination, but there are couples -he assured- who need a highly complex treatment, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic injection (ICSI).
