At war with boredom: porn stars, folk rhymes and roommate vampires

1- With sun and poppers

For years, Karen and Barry Mason’s children thought their parents were odd booksellers that when they walked through the store, they were told to bow their heads and look at their shoes. In reality, the couple, an ex-journalist passionate about censorship, an engineer who worked in the field of special effects, is the head of Circus of Books, one of the most important sales outlets for gay porn magazines and cassettes from Los Angeles in the 70s and 80s. It is their daughter, Rachel, who tells this incredible story where the religious convictions of the mother, a practicing Jew, and the liberal good humor of the paternal mingle with the rise of the empire of Larry Flynt, with lively effervescence from the hard world (interview with TTBM star Jeff Stryker not too badly preserved) and a community still very hidden, then the devastating arrival of AIDS. And finally, the coup de grace, the ill-negotiated emergence of the Web and free ass by the ton.

2- With the past going well

The National Theater of Brittany launches an important collective reading, not of Racine or Koltès, but of France’s world history. The work, written by 122 historians under the direction of Patrick Boucheron, had caused controversy when it appeared in 2017 at Le Seuil, accused of minimizing certain events, such as the Battle of Poitiers in 732, or of exaggerating the importance of certain characters, like Dominique de Villepin (whom we kiss). To challenge the concept of the end of globalization today, “Because globalization has existed since the silkworm arrived from China to Italy”, director Arthur Nauzyciel, head of TNB, offers an episode read / performed on a SoundCloud page every day. We recommend, to relax well, “1347, the plague reaches France”, read by Tania de Montaigne.

3- With Varda on the lookout

In August 1968, Agnès Varda, went to Oakland equipped with a 16 mm camera where she posed as an observer in solidarity with a mobilization of the Black Panthers. The leather of revolutionary activism, its scenography between the neo-agora hippie and the martial decorum… This is indeed a piece of history of civil rights being written, crossing the romanticism of the struggle armed with its hard-line intransigence, all hanging from an animal fable: this is the story of the black panther against the pig-cops. The documentary produced by the filmmaker is available for free until 4 p.m. Wednesday.

4- With the voice from within

Apple quarantine sessions

Closer to the vignette than to the symphony (average duration, one minute and a half), the Quarantine Phone Sessions de Pomme, winner of the revelation album for loopholes to the latest music victories, meandering along with unique folk rhymes. Recorded on the iPhone, with just the help of an acoustic guitar, these “mini songs” (That’s OK, Dangerous …) form the diary of a young woman leaning over her time, as it were said from the precipice. “I tried to write in English, to change, on simple themes: my dog, the situation, very direct things, without looking for poetry, without looking for the concept. And then over the days, I had five songs. So here they are ”, announces the singer, specifying that the PE will self-destruct at the end of the confinement, when will return “Milder days”.

5- With canines in the air

Vampires in complete privacy

Short film in 2006, long hair-raising in 2014, Vampires in complete privacy reached its final stage of mutation in 2019 by becoming a series, still under the leadership of its two creators, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. “False good idea!” had we whistled all canines outside, fearing that this hilarious true-fake documentary on the daily life of three shared vampires would disintegrate by playing unnecessary overtime. Error: the first season showed the endurance of the concept, thanks in particular to high-end writing and impeccable casting, led by British comedians Natasia Demetriou and Kayvan Novak. Impression confirmed by a second season launched a few days ago and already reaching heights, where we find our four vampires (Nadja, Nandor, Laszlo and the abominable Colin Robinson, “psychic vampire” who empties his victims of their energy annoying them to die) forced to resuscitate house personnel killed in error and to call upon a necromancer to come to end from an infestation of ghosts.
