Back from injury, Nicolas Edet, from C’Chartres Cyclisme, will take the start of the Tour du Finistère

To say that Nicolas Edet is a “new runner” is undoubtedly excessive. But to say that his arrival at Arkea gave him a new impetus is indisputable.

At 34, the Fertois, who will line up this Saturday May 21 on the Tour du Finistère and Sunday May 22 on the Boucles de l’Aulne (1.1), has however started the new season with a lot of doubts. Those linked to a change of training which he was not used to (he had been racing with Cofidis since his professional debut in 2011) and a serious injury contracted during a fall on the Tour of Italy *.

At the start of the Tour on July 1, in Copenhagen (Denmark)?

But quickly, the rider with a license from C’Chartres Cyclisme among amateurs found his place in the Breton team. “I already knew Laurent Pichon, Romain Hardy or Anthony Delaplace. If we add those I had already worked with at Cofidis like Nacer Bouhanni or Hugo Hofstetter, I did not arrive in unfamiliar territory, ”confides the 30-year-old, who had not imagined such a start to the season.

Three months after this one, which was also postponed after he contracted Covid at the Tour de Mallorca, Edet does not have enough fingers on one hand to count his Top 10 (6, read here -versus). Le Fertois savors: “At the start of the year, I essentially had a role as a team member for Warren (Barguil) and Nairo (Quintana). But the injury of the second in the Tour of Turkey (2.HC) reshuffled the cards a bit, ”admits Edet, who finished the Ottoman event in a good 4th place overall, despite a fall on the final stage.

Edet falls on the Tour of Italy

Fifteen days later, crowned with the status of protected rider and thanks to the last minute withdrawal from the Colombian, Edet finished the Tour of Asturias (2.1) in a good 3rd place overall. “I’m not a new runner because the man is damaged and the pain in the arm is still present?! But I think my forced stop helped give me some freshness. Even if at the time when I went through this ordeal, I did not see a lot of positive in what was happening to me”, observes with hindsight Edet, who will put himself this weekend at the service of Breton Warren Barguil, who will play for residence.

Because even if the Fertois has been able to reassure himself for two months about his state of form and his ability to assume the role of leader, he remains a luxury teammate, as his sports director Yvon Ledanois affirmed at the end of March: “We are counting on Nico to be present around our leaders, in particular Nairo and not to win an event. He is one of the good climbers but in the high mountains, he is blocked by those who are excellent”.

Two months later, Edet has certainly not become a second leader on the Grand Tours, but his recent results have led his staff to review their plans, to the point of imagining the participation of the Sarthois in the next Tour de France (from 1st to July 24), while this one was only supposed to enter the Vuelta initially. “Nothing has been decided yet, it’s only at the thinking stage”, delays Edet, an active link in a Breton team with 10 victories this season who hopes to enter the World Tour next season. A dynamic that would almost make him regret not having taken the plunge earlier?? “Things happen when they have to happen. After the Tour of Italy, I had the operation done by Doctor Colin, one of the best surgeons in the industry, who is also a very good friend of Emmanuel (Hubert, manager of Arkea). It’s the kind of bend that makes you want to believe in destiny…”, he concludes, philosophically.
