At least two people in the southwest have not survived swimming trips in the past few days.

In Mannheim, a group of young people wanted to save a non-swimmer from drowning in an exemplary manner. But the 53-year-old died in a hospital on Saturday night, the police said. The young people had rescued the man from Lake Rheinau on Friday evening when he went under. On the shore, they tried to revive the 53-year-old until the rescue workers came. They took the man to the hospital.

Again and again bathing trips end fatally

An 84-year-old man died while swimming in a lake near Tettnang (Bodenseekreis). Rescue workers found the lifeless body on the bank in the water, and according to the police on Saturday, an emergency doctor could only determine the man’s death. The exact cause of death has yet to be determined. The senior’s partner had alerted the helpers on Friday because she had not been able to find the man at the lake for some time.

Again and again bathing trips end fatally. According to the German Life Saving Society (DLRG), 35 people drowned in Baden-Württemberg’s lakes, rivers and other bodies of water last year. In 2021, Baden-Württemberg was the federal state with the second most bathing deaths behind Bavaria (60 deaths). According to the DLRG, 39 people died in the southwest while swimming the year before.
