In 2020, as a result of the 44-day Second Karabakh War, Azerbaijan regained control over a part of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts (Lachin district in part). According to the November 10 agreement of the same year (between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia), the hostilities were stopped, and Russian peacekeepers were deployed in the Lachin corridor (Lachin district is located on the border with Armenia) and on the contact line in Karabakh. But since this 5-kilometer corridor goes to the city of Lachin and the villages of Zabukh and Sus of this region, Azerbaijan did not control them.
However, according to the tripartite agreement, Azerbaijan has built an alternative route to the previous corridor bypassing the city of Lachin. This road also connects Armenia and the city of Khankendi in Azerbaijan. It was announced that the construction work is continuing on the part of the road on the Armenian side.
The Karabakh conflict started in 1988. The Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and 7 districts adjacent to it were occupied until the ceasefire agreement in 1994.
