Balma. Blood supply: a dangerously low level

the essential
The next collection of the French Blood Establishment (EFS) is scheduled for tomorrow in Balma. And there is urgency!

The next blood drive organized by the association of blood donors of Balma and Pin-Balma (ADSB) will take place tomorrow Friday. Donating blood requires being between 18 and 71 years old, in good health and weighing more than 50 kg. Moreover, certain medical treatments, even recent stays in countries where malaria is endemic, do not allow blood to be donated. Since the beginning of the year in Balma, the doctors of the French Blood Establishment (EFS) have taken 521 people, compared to 789 at the same time in 2021. A drop which is partly explained by a reduction in the number of sessions , which amounted to 10 half-days in the first half of 2021, compared to 7 in 2022.

A vital emergency

“The level of blood reserves in France is historically low,” warned the EFS at the start of the summer. A situation “which could prove dangerous in the short term to treat patients”, he added. The needs are significant, especially for people undergoing chemotherapy, suffering from certain anemias or victims of an accident. Moreover, the supply of red blood cells is sometimes essential after a difficult delivery. If the attendance of collections does not recover in the very short term, “it will not allow the EFS to supply hospitals and clinics with blood products”, recalled the establishment. An emergency which can prove to be vital, underlines the president of the ADSB (Association of voluntary blood donors), Jean-Marie Veys: “Caregivers are always afraid of knowing the moment when it will be necessary to choose between several patients because we doesn’t have enough blood bags!”

Promote blood donation

They are twenty volunteers within the ADSB to hold six annual sessions in Balma. “They prepare the room and welcome the public. They also carry out communication actions to ensure the promotion of blood donation”, specifies the president. Collections are supervised by EFS doctors, who see the volunteers individually. At the end of the session, everyone is invited to join a recovery area where a snack is served.
