Brussels, Nov 24 (EFE).- Barcelona and Munich signed a commitment on Thursday with measures to be “zero waste candidate” cities, becoming the most important European cities to take that step, the non-governmental organization Zero Waste Europe reported today.
The Zero Waste Cities and Towns certification is a European certification standard evaluated by third parties, developed by the non-governmental organization Mission Zero Academy (MiZA) and with the support of Zero Waste Europe (ZWE), those organizations indicated in a statement.
This standard consists of five steps (expression of interest, commitment, implementation, certification and annual improvements).
Barcelona “has a wide range of waste prevention, reuse and recycling measures” and “has created a strategic plan dedicated to improving its actions in waste management and prevention, broadly involving both the local community and the different groups of interest to facilitate the transition towards zero waste”, they added.
Among the objectives that Barcelona has set itself to become a city with zero waste, a selective collection rate of 67% in 2027 stands out, above the 48% European average, and reducing municipal waste on that horizon to 427 kilos per inhabitant , compared to 447.
“Big cities are indebted to their territory, we produce a large amount of waste and it is time for us to take responsibility. Barcelona’s commitment to the “Zero Waste” strategy shows that we care and that we act: we want to be a climate-friendly city neutral and inspire many others”, declared the mayoress of Barcelona, Ada Colau, in the note.
The executive director of Zero Waste Europe, Joan Marc Simon, stressed that his hometown is committed to “achieving virtuosity in resource management.”
“Barcelona still has many challenges ahead, but the commitment to zero waste certification is a step in the right direction,” he added. EFE
