beach party, more security and fire restrictions

After two years marked by the restrictions of the pandemic, Barcelona goes into a festival of Sant Joan of “normality” which will entail a great device specific of safety, fire prevention and cleaning. In 2019 some 60.000 personas They concentrated on the beaches to celebrate that magical night, so the municipal operation starts from that portrait to coordinate all its services and respond to the needs that arise, especially in the most intensively used spaces. The prevention of fires at a time of high risk will mark the coverage of a long night of “great complexity”, with Prohibition of carrying out activities with fire less than 500 meters from forest areas of Collserola and Montjuïc.

Deputy Mayor for SecurityAlbert Batlle, has explained that it will be a verbena without restrictions, but has encouraged citizens to exhibit civics and try as far as possible to avoid large gatherings and opt for “proximity in the residential environment” celebrations. Despite everything, the beach will remain open all night as the epicenter of the parties, until evicted by Guardia Urbana and Mossos d’Esquadra at six in the morning for its accelerated cleaning before the first swimmers appear on the 24th.

This deployment extraordinary maintenance will have 91 teams and 366 workers –“the most important of the year”–, divided between the preparations, the set-up at sunrise and the interventions until the 25th. Not only on the coast (with chemical toilets and 2,685 cardboard bins and 124 containers extra), but also in surrounding areas: Vila Olímpica, Front Marítim, Parc del Poblenou…

During the day, the Urban “will channel” the flows of entry into the Barceloneta beach facilitating entry through the ends of the beach and will increase its presence in the neighborhood to ensure the rest of the neighbours. It will not be a shielding of the neighborhood, but will follow the same pattern already carried out last year to avoid crowds, explained the mayor of the body, Pedro Velázquez.

The beach will be a territory of revelry, although with tight control of the street sale of alcohol, of the warehouses that supply it, as well as of its commercialization in stores after 11:00 p.m. However, the councilor for Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, Eloi Badia, has confirmed that the beach bars will have to close at 3:30 a.m. (“like the rest of the bars and restaurants in the city”), after years of longer hours. They will not be able to host parties or DJs, which has caused outrage among the operators. It will be specially controlled that there are no unauthorized parties.

In this area, before and after the party, will be used drones (in real time, not recording) to control incidents, and in the event of fires in forest areas, they could be used to facilitate emergency operations.

The municipal police will have no respite, in their multiple crusade of breathalyzer controls and drugs throughout the city, against uncivil attitudes in public spaces, crime prevention and others.

Improve the transversal management of the soiree

Two years ago the consistory carried out an analysis of the festival of Sant Joan to try to improve its management with a more cross-sectional view. As a result, for example, the gender perspective has been enhanced. The night of the verbena will be activated eight safe itineraries on the coast of Ciutat Vella and Sant Martí, as well as on the Born and Lluís Companys, to the accesses to public transport, in order to prevent any kind of sexual assault or harassment and gender-based violenceVelázquez has detailed.

The police will patrol these routes with special emphasis on points that are poorly lit or that generate insecurity. There will also be a Lilac Point on the Paseo Marítim, for prevention and attention to these cases, which will be active throughout the summer. And five pairs of informers will be distributed that night in the area. In parallel, it has improved the illumination of the ride, which will be maintained throughout the season.

The days before the verbena, Civil Protection is working on prevention to get to the celebration “with the best safety conditions”, while the Barcelona Fire Brigade carries out tasks of inspection, control and authorization of the places where firecrackers are sold and the pyrotechnic booths. have been authorized 133 points of sale.

The head of the Civil Protection, Prevention, Firefighting and Rescue service, Sebastià Massagué, It has also called for extreme precautions with pyrotechnics. He has asked that the traditional throwing of lanterns on the beach be avoided as much as possible, over which “it is difficult to have control” and that can end up causing a fire in another point. In the spotlight will also be the points where firewood or madreas are accumulated, likely to be used to make bonfires without permission and in the forest area of Parc de Collserola (Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Horta-Guinardó and Nou Barris).

Last year the regulations were updated city bonfires, establishing three types. The largest does not have a fire load limit, the small one cannot exceed 250 kilos of wood and the one for cauldrons is less than 25 kilos. The first is the only one that needs a report from the Fire Department, which on this occasion has validated cinco throughout the city (three in the Eixample, one in San Andreu and one in San Martí).
