Because of "terrorist thinking" in Saudi Arabia almost 40 people are sentenced to death. One of them is being brutally executed for a serious crime.

Saudi Arabia executed 37 people convicted of "terrorism". The death sentences had been carried out in the capital Riyadh, the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, in the province of Kassim and in the eastern province, said the Ministry of Interior in a statement.

The executed were all found guilty of having acquired "terrorist, extremist thinking," it said. The most common method of execution in Saudi Arabia is beheading with a saber. As the ministry announced, one of the convicts was crucified; a method of execution intended only for particularly serious crimes.

According to the human rights organization Amnesty International, in 2018 149 people were executed in Saudi Arabia. This is the second highest number after Iran with 253 executions. Overall, there have been at least 690 executions in 20 states worldwide. In the previous year there were still 993 executions in 23 states. However, there is a significant number of unreported cases, especially in China, where in 2018 allegedly several thousand people were executed, according to the annual report.
