– “YB is in a very bad position as the industry leader”
There aren’t enough grass pitches in Bern. This affects mass sport – but also the professionals from YB. Why has politics not found a solution for over 40 years?

In the city of Bern, a dispute about grass pitches is smoldering, the beginning of which dates back years: YB demands its own training facilities outside the stadium – preferably on the Allmend. To this day, the Young Boys are playing in Bernese politics. Football editor Dominic Wuillemin says in the Bern podcast “Conversations” with a view to the training infrastructure: “YB is in a very bad position as the industry leader in the Super League.”
The Bern lawn dispute has not been resolved to this day. He even accentuated himself. Because: Even in mass sports, there are more and more clubs that need space.
Why is the lawn issue in Bern so tricky and politically controversial? Is YB demanding too much – or is politics too stubborn? And is there finally a solution thanks to the 2025 Women’s Football Championship?
Political opponents Tom Berger and Michael Sutter discuss this in the current episode of “Gestalksstoff”. As an FDP city councillor, Berger has been working for years to ensure that YB receives the desired training sites on the Bernese Allmend. Sutter, on the other hand, helped prevent exactly that as an SP city councillor. Will they agree on where YB 2026 is training – and which playing surface is then laid in Wankdorf?
