Blizzard Forms Pro Overwatch Electronic Sports League

Watch out, Overwatch fans: Blizzard just announced the creation of a new professional sports league for the successful team shooter.

The Overwatch League will focus on “the long-term stability of teams, as well as opportunities for players to establish the types of professional careers associated with traditional sports,” Blizzard said in its announcement. The inaugural season begins early next year. Before that happens, Blizzard will host a combination where eligible players “who have previously distinguished themselves in the competition” will be invited to try out in teams.

The players of the combined team will be able to demonstrate their skills through a series of tests, so that the team owners can sign the people who best complete their lists. Anyone who is assumed by a team during the signing period will be guaranteed a contact, which includes base salary and benefits.

Each Overwatch League team will represent a major city. Over time, Blizzard hopes to expand the league to include teams from the Americas, Europe, China, Korea, and the Asia-Pacific region.

Blizzard has promised to share team announcements and more information about the Overwatch League in the coming months. In the meantime, keep practicing and make a name for yourself in Overwatch for a chance to be invited to the combine.
