How does blue light affect sleep?

Glasses with a blue light filter can improve sleep and increase work performance, according to a joint study by researchers from Indiana University and the University of Washington. The study was published in the English-language journal “Journal of Applied Psychology”.

Night owls benefited more from glasses

In general, the effects of wearing glasses with blue light filtering were greater for so-called night owls than for early risers.
Although reducing the exposure to blue light is beneficial for most people, night owls seem to benefit more from it because they are confronted with larger deviations between their internal clock and the externally controlled working hours, the researchers explain.

The model used in the new study shows how and when wearing glasses with a blue light filter can help achieve a higher quality of life and work performance. Because daily engagement and the execution of tasks seem to be related to the underlying biological processes such as the circadian rhythm, which is influenced by the blue light, according to the research group.
Blue light glasses are effective and inexpensive
“This study provides evidence of a very cost-effective means of improving sleep and work results, and the benefits achieved are gigantic. Personally, I don’t know of any other interventions that would be as effective at such low cost, ”said study author Professor Cristiano L. Guarana of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business in a press release.
The researchers add that their analyzes show a general pattern that blue light filtering can have a cumulative effect on key performance variables, at least in the short term. (as)
