Brazil’s government rules out lockdown despite many deaths
Even at the peak of the corona pandemic in Brazil, President Jair Bolsonaro continues to rule out tough exit restrictions in the South American country. “We will look for alternatives. We will not accept the policy of staying at home, of cordoning off, of lockdown, ”said the head of state on Wednesday, according to a report by the G1 news portal, during a visit to the south of the country. Bolsonaro played down the corona virus from the start and is resisting a nationwide lockdown, referring to the economic consequences since the beginning of the pandemic.
Brazil is a hot spot in the corona pandemic: On Tuesday, health authorities registered more than 4000 deaths related to Covid-19 in one day for the first time. So far, more than 13 million people in the largest country in Latin America have been proven to be infected with the coronavirus, and almost 337,000 people have died. Most recently, scientists had also identified a new variant of the corona virus.
