Bregenz Artistic Director Sobotka is moving to the Berlin State Opera

The director of the Bregenz Festival, Elisabeth Sobotka, is moving to Berlin after the 2024 festival season. Corresponding German media reports confirmed the Bregenz Festival on Thursday afternoon in coordination with the Berlin Senator for Culture, Klaus Lederer. The 56-year-old will be director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden from autumn 2024.

As agreed, she will fulfill her contract with the Bregenz Festival until the end of the term after the summer of 2024. The cultural manager from Vienna has been in charge of the summer festival on Lake Constance since 2015. The vacant position in Bregenz is to be advertised for replacement after the upcoming festival summer.

Sobotka is returning to one of her former workplaces in a new role. In autumn 2002 she was hired by Daniel Barenboim and Peter Mussbach as opera director of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden and held this position until she moved to the Graz Opera in 2009. Sobotka was apparently Daniel Barenboim’s preferred candidate to succeed Matthias Schulz, whose contract expires in 2024: “I have known and respected Elisabeth Sobotka for many years. Her time as opera director at the State Opera was characterized by a very gratifying and fruitful collaboration, and so I look forward to Ms. Sobotka’s assumption of office with great pleasure.”

“Elisabeth Sobotka has not only created great success on the lake stage, but also artistically profiled the other venues of the festival,” says a statement from the President of the Bregenz Festival, Hans-Peter Metzler: “Although there are still three festival summers ahead of us, I would like to express my great appreciation for your outstanding artistic work and congratulate you on your new position in Berlin.”
