Only a few days after the second round of the DFB Cup, the Bundesliga starts its 10th matchday and BVB’s home game against 1. FC Köln is on the agenda. The kick-off in Signal Iduna Park is on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sport Bundesliga.
On paper, BVB are the relatively clear favorites. Dortmund have won all of their home games so far and are well on the way to becoming a real force again in their own stadium. Nevertheless, the greatest caution is required, because under the new coach Steffen Baumgart 1. FC Cologne has taken a big step forward and has developed into a really good and, above all, difficult to play Bundesliga team.
If you leave out the 5-0 bankruptcy in Hoffenheim, Cologne have at least made life difficult for every opponent. Whether that could be the case against Dortmund and what else we think about this game, our Dortmund against Cologne tip will tell you now.

Dortmund Team Check
Although Borussia Dortmund has had an excellent season so far on many levels, there is still no general satisfaction. After all, there are still some factors that significantly dampen the euphoria at the black and yellow Borussia. On the one hand there is the dependency on the currently injured storm jewel Erling Haaland. Without him, BVB lacks a lot of penetrative power in the offensive. Even the bitter 4-0 bankruptcy at Ajax Amsterdam should not have disappeared from the minds of those involved, as well as the bad early phase in the 1-3 win in Bielefeld or the defeats in Gladbach (1-0) and Freiburg (2: 2) 1).
It is becoming apparent that the lack of consistency could be an issue again this year. With all the criticism, however, the many positive aspects must not be forgotten. BVB last achieved seven wins in the first nine match days, as in the current season, in the 2013/14 season. It was never again at this point in time! The home record is even more impressive: five home games – five home wins. The BVB start record is six wins from the first six home games of a Bundesliga season. The current 2nd place in the table is also the best season position for BVB. Dortmund was last in the table in August 2019 – after a 3-1 win over Cologne! If that’s not a good omen for the upcoming game.
- Tor: Kobel
- Defensive: Akanji, Hummels, Can
- Midfield: Meunier, Witsel, Bellingham, Hazard
- Offensive: Brandt, Grind, Giant
Dortmund’s regular goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is still questionable. Otherwise there shouldn’t be any big surprises in the starting XI. Julian Brandt, Marco Reus and Donyell Malen will play on the offensive. Since no left-back is fit, it will again be a back three with Thorgan Hazard as a flank player.
1. FC Köln has played a very decent season so far and after nine matchdays they are in eighth place in the Bundesliga. From the last six games, the Effzeh could only get one victory, but in this period he had to deal with many good opponents and at least played four draws. Only the 5-0 clap in Hoffenheim does not fit into the picture of the season so far. Last Wednesday, however, it was observed that even a seemingly overpowering team like FC Bayern can catch a pitch-black day.
At the derby in Leverkusen, Cologne were able to fight for a 2-2 win on the last day of the match after an early 0-2 deficit. In the cup, the Baumgart-Elf won 0-2 at VfB Stuttgart a few days ago. For once, double goal scorer Anthony Modeste didn’t hit with his head there. In the Bundesliga, Cologne have already scored five headed goals – four of them by Modeste alone, which is nothing more than a logical consequence of the new style of play. No team in the league hits more crosses than 1. FC Köln (144). In Dortmund, Steffen Baumgart may have to think about a plan B, because BVB has allowed the fewest opposing crosses this season (57).
1. FC Köln line-up
- Tor: Horn
- Defensive: Schmitz, Kilian, Czichos, Hector
- Midfield: Ljubicic, Özcan, Kainz, Duda
- Offensive: Uth, Modeste
Injured, Ellyes Skhiri is still missing from Cologne. The operational capability of Florian Kainz and Rafael Czichos is questionable. Timo Hübers and Jan Thielmann are available as alternatives. Sebastian Andersson is also a candidate for the starting XI.
BVB – 1. FC Köln direct comparison
This traditional duel has already taken place 102 times. BVB won 41 of these duels, and Cologne won 34 times. The teams drew a proud 27 times. From the last two duels, however, the Cologne team were able to take four points after they had previously lost four times in a row.
Dortmund – Cologne Facts & Statistics
- On matchday 9, 2020/21, Cologne won 2-1 in Dortmund – it was the first Cologne success in Dortmund after almost 30 years
- Dortmund only remained without a win against 3 clubs in the last Bundesliga season: against Bayern (two defeats), Frankfurt and Cologne (each one defeat, one draw)
- Borussia Dortmund is the most dominant team in the league with 61% possession, Cologne also has a high share of 55%
- 1. FC Köln scores 40% of its goals between the 46th and 60th minute
Dortmund vs. Cologne tip & forecast:
Second against eighth – a duel between these two clubs was last so high almost 21 years ago. But despite the upswing in Cologne, we are convinced that the favored BVB will win this duel. So far, Dortmund has been an absolute power in its own stadium. All five home games were won, against Cologne the starting record of six home wins from the first six games can now be equalized. This tip is also supported by the fact that the Cologne team under Steffen Baumgart has a fairly offensive style of play, which is generally a good match for a team that likes to play like BVB.
In view of the 1.44 quota for a win for Dortmund, this tip is usually not really lucrative. As a new customer at BildBet, things look very different. In this case, the Bet on a home win for Borussia with an unbeatable rate of 5.00.
Anyone who has already opened an account with BildBet should consider betting on goals in the second half. In games with Dortmund participation, most hits are scored after the break (24). The second most goals in the second half are in games with Cologne participation (22). It is therefore quite possible that the duel between the two clubs will only really pick up speed in the second 45 minutes. For at least two goals in the second half, BildBet has a solid 1.57 rate, and for three or more hits after the break a 2.80 rate.
