FC Schalke 04 is loaning Jean-Clair Todibo from FC Barcelona. The 20-year-old French central defender will initially join the Bundesliga in fifth place for six months. "He is one of the best young central defenders currently in Europe," said Schalke coach David Wagner about the new signing. After striker Michael Gregoritsch from FC Augsburg, Todibo is the second winter access for Schalke.
Backup with development potential
Todibo is said to close the gap that resulted from the defeats of Benjamin Stambouli and Salif Sané in Schalke's central defense. Both are still down for a while. Matija Nastasic and Ozan Kabak have so far been considered to be set in the Schalke center.
The French U20 international moved from FC Toulouse to FC Barcelona in January 2019, but he only played 77 minutes in the league. Once he was used in the Champions League against Inter Milan.
As FC Barcelona announced, the rental fee is 1.5 million euros. FC Schalke can draw a purchase option for a further 25 million euros. This would make it the most expensive Schalke transfer in club history. FC Barcelona would then have the option, however, to retrieve it at a later date for 50 million euros.
