The prize for Alex Klaasen was in the engagement category for his performance Showponies 2, the sequel to his successful show Showponies. The jury calls it a wonderful party, with a serious message. “Daan Wijnands’ choreographies are sublime, the lyrics by Jurrian van Dongen, among others, very moving and the interplay is finger-licking good.”
In the cabaret category, Elke Vierveijzer was awarded for her show Sky. “Every Vierveijzer does not sing songs, she blows them straight into your heart,” writes the jury. “The beautiful, varied arrangements and the empathetic musical accompaniment of Michiel Wetzer complete Lucht.”
The award for the greatest cabaret talent, Neerlands Hoop, went to Nina de la Parra. “She takes us with the program God’s ways from the Netherlands to Suriname at an overwhelming pace and from political statements to stories about adventures in dingy hotels. It produces a whirlwind of a performance, in which the comedian switches between languages as quickly as between emotions.”
The cabaret prices exceptionally went over two theater seasons, 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. Due to corona, the Association of Theater and Concertgebouw Directors (VSCD) did not award any prizes last year.
Martin van Waardenberg and Wilfried de Jong received a VSCD Oeuvre Prize. The cabaret duo has been praised for their upsetting shows since the 1980s. “Shame or embarrassment play no part in their universe, which combines Rotterdam street humor with fantastic and often poetic stage images. That marriage between what is sometimes called high and low culture gives the work of these friends has a special character”.
