Robert Mondavi became independent in 1965. His vision was to produce quality wines comparable to the best in the world, especially the French. In 1976, during a legendary comparative tasting, the best Burgundy and Bordeaux were supplanted by those of Mondavi, and the vineyards of California entered the big leagues.
