Canada and India announced the relaunch of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Canada and India during the Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment.
Canada and India have also agreed to consider an early progress trade agreement as a transitional step towards a CEPA.
The first round since the restart was hosted by Canada and was played virtually April 19-25, 2022. This round has been widely used as an introductory opportunity for Canada and India to relaunch discussions on the broad range of issues the parties seek to address in a comprehensive trade deal.
Ministers expressed satisfaction with the strong recovery in bilateral trade in 2021 following the economic contraction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with bilateral merchandise trade reaching US$6.29 billion, a 12% growth over the previous year.
